Happy New Year! It's time for our final challenge!! Correction, MY final challenge. Emily *ahem* has a little bit further to go. It's time for our own interpretation of the Work of Art Season 2 finale! The challenge is to create a collection that will stun and amaze the art world. Our interpretation: create a collection that we think is semi-artistic, that will stun the art world because the art world doesn't think it is even remotely artistic. OK, I'll be a little bit more optimistic. We'll create a collection of at least 3 pieces, representing our personal style.
Due date: the evening of Sunday, 8 January 2012!
Update: As of the evening of 8 January, I'm approximately 67% done with the project. So I'm going to be nice to myself and say "post it by 15 January." So that is my new deadline. The evening of 15 January.

Rules for artwork inspired by Work of Art, Season 2, Challenge #9
We've made it to the next-to-last challenge! And here it is... The Work of Art contestants went to a small town, where they had to find a subject for a portrait. For our interpretation, we don't have to travel to a small town, but we will find someone and create a portrait.
Due date: Monday, 19 December, 6 pm.

Update: the holidays have completely thrown my schedule off!! So the portrait challenge will now be due 28 December. K? Good. :)

Rules for artwork inspired by Work of Art, Season 2, Challenge #8
Well, I'm still hopeful that Emily will post her Challenge #7 results. But for now, I'm gonna post the new challenge. It's pretty straightforward... this week we are supposed to make a work of art that is commercial (on the show they were required to sell it on the street), but also belongs in a gallery. Due date: 6 pm Monday, 12 December?

Rules for artwork inspired by Work of Art, Season 2, Challenge #7
As you may have noticed, we had a little vacation from blogging last week. There was no episode of Work of Art! We're back this week, with a new challenge: create a work of art using at least one car part. Technically, the contestants were limited to parts from one kind of car. We're opening our challenge up to parts from whatever car we choose (no, we are not planning to steal parts from cars). And in defiance of Emily's request, I hereby proclaim that photographs of car parts are also acceptable. Take that, Emily.
Due date: 6 p.m. on Monday, 5 December. (take note, Emily!!)
Here's how our last challenge turned out:

Rules for artwork inspired by Work of Art, Season 2, Challenge #6
This week's Work of Art challenge is a little bit unfortunate... for Tewz, that is. The show's street art specialist was eliminated just before the street art challenge!! Oops, sorry, I forgot to say "spoilers!" Sorry!
That's right, we're doing a street art challenge this week. Hooray, we get to deface public property!! Um, no. Ours isn't even going to be public (well... except for the blog postings at the end of the challenge). We're going to do a lawful, scaled down version of this challenge. It's as simple as this: create our own interpretation of street art. Due date: Monday, 21 November. I'll post my blog that night, and Emily will add hers whenever she feeeeels like it. Oh, technically this one's a team challenge... so collaboration is allowed, if desired.
To remind you, here were our pieces that were inspired by last week's newspaper challenge:

Rules for artwork inspired by Work of Art, Season 2, Challenge #5
This week the Work of Art contestants visited the New York Times. The challenge? Find a newspaper headline to inspire you... and use the actual newspaper in your artwork. Emily and I opted not to limit ourselves to the New York Times, and went to the Newseum's "Today's Front Pages" site to choose our headlines.
My choice was from the 11/9 Anchorage Daily News: "EPIC STORM BEARS DOWN"
Emily selected a headline from the 11/9 Manteca Bulletin: "Salmon giveaway helps feed people"
Deadline: 6:00 p.m. on Monday, 14 November.

Rules for artwork inspired by Work of Art, Season 2, Challenge #4
Sorry for the delay in posting the latest challenge. Why so late? Well, we needed concurrence from our nieces and nephews! "Why is that," you may ask. Why? Because this week's challenge is all about kids! We're supposed to draw inspiration from a piece of art done by a child, and create artwork that has some visible connection to the child's artwork. When you view the two together, you should be able to see the connection. Our sister Melissa agreed to let her kids participate. They are now hard at work creating 3 amazing works of art.
Edit (11/4/2011):
We're modifying the due date slightly. We're going to finish our pieces by Monday, 7 November (6:00 p.m.), and will post our final projects not long after that.
Kristine will create a piece based on Lauren's drawing:

Emily will make a piece based on Robbie's drawing:

And we both will draw additional inspiration from Benjamin's drawing:

Rules for artwork inspired by Work of Art, Season 2, Challenge #3
This week we will be creating a piece of pop art! We are supposed to take inspiration from classic pop artists, but create our own modern interpretation. Due date: Sunday at 5! Hmm, this sounds deceptively straightforward. I wonder if there is going to be a twist!! We'll decide when we watch the show whether to complete any twists... if they exist.
In the meantime, here is a reminder of our last challenge (art inspired by motion):

Rules for artwork inspired by Work of Art, Season 2, Challenge #2
This week is all about Parkour. That means Emily has to jump around walls and stuff, and make art out of the blood that results from her experience. OK, not really... but the Work of Art challenge is indeed about motion, inspired by Parkour. Technically this is a group challenge--the show's contestants were divided into two groups, and are making individual pieces that individually and collectively represent movement. So, naturally, Emily and I performed extremely complex differential calculus and divided ourselves into two groups. She is the team captain of her group, but I am just a lowly peon in my group (the team lead has something against me... I predict lots of dramatic team conflict, which is pretty much the lifeblood of reality TV).
Team Emily and Team Kristine will complete the Parkour-inspired challenges no later than 5:00 p.m. (East Coast time) on Sunday. Supplies can be purchased, but we're not going crazy... unless Emily was serious about building a car from scratch. I bet she'll do it.
Tune back in Sunday evening for our final products!
As a reminder of our past artistic glory, these were the end products from Challenge #1:

(and p.s., you still have time to vote for my Challenge #1 artwork as the winning piece)

Rules for artwork inspired by Work of Art, Season 2, Challenge #1
This is going to be fun!! Here's the first challenge + mutually agreed upon rules... or so I unilaterally proclaim. Emily went to bed early. But I'm sure she'll be fine with this. Right, Emily?
The challenge: Transform a kitschy, thrift store-type piece of art (painting, picture, sculpture, ...) into something you'd see displayed in an art gallery. Make it work within your personal artistic style. Some part of the original work must be visible and recognizable.
Our rules: We have a limit of $5 to purchase a piece of art from a local thrift store. We have 'til Saturday at 3:00 pm (Eastern time) to upcycle our items, after which we will compare/contrast, then watch the show. Blog posts detailing our creative efforts to follow.
Game on.
Update: (10/14/2011)
OK, maybe I should've coordinated the rules with Emily before posting. Sorry, Emily, that I conveniently forgot that you work on Saturdays. Whoops. New deadline: Sunday, 5 pm! You'll see our first posts sometime Sunday evening!
